Founded in 1933, the IRC is the leading non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services and advocacy for victims of oppression or violent conflict. The IRC works with refugee populations in 25 countries around the world and in 24 domestic resettlement offices. The IRC in Elizabeth, New Jersey is a satellite office of IRC New York and has been resettling refugees for over a decade. The IRC endows refugees and other survivors of war and civil unrest with resources to achieve self-sufficiency and stability. Our staff, many of whom were resettled by the IRC, has resettled more than 23,000 refugees from 30 countries. Volunteers and staff empower refugees to define their own futures as they transition into new lives. Before refugees arrive in New Jersey, the staff prepares safe apartments for each of their new clients. Volunteers and case managers greet refugees at the airport and provide them with weather-appropriate clothing and a hot meal. Immediately, we help refugees orient themselves to their new home. From setting up bank accounts to navigating public transportation and arranging for English classes and medical care, staff and volunteers help refugees to overcome the challenges of life in a new place. None of our work would be possible without dedicated volunteers. Volunteers for the IRC New Jersey Resettlement Office should email a resume and cover . Volunteers must be able to come in person to the IRC office in Elizabeth, New Jersey for an interview, training sessions and be willing to travel as agreed upon with an IRC staff member. To maximize the value of the volunteering for volunteers, refugees, and IRC staff, most positions require a 2-6 hour/week minimum commitment for 3 months. Volunteers may find that their assignments vary from time to time due to the IRC in New Jersey’s small size and to the broad range of services that we provide to refugees. Transportation Assistant: Volunteer transportation assistants will spend a few hours each week or month in New Jersey driving refugees to medical appointments, registering for school, applying for social security, or to other appointments. Transportation assistants will drive clients with large families to the grocery store so they are able to buy and transport enough food to their apartments. They will also assist with furnishing apartments for new arrivals. Transportation assistants with vans and trucks will regularly pick up and distribute donations in New York and New Jersey to ensure that clients from both offices are receiving needed donations. Transportation assistants introduce refugees to their new neighborhoods and communities, and are critical to ensuring that their various needs are met, providing for a smooth transition into life in the United States during the resettlement process.
